How To Teach Your Labrador Retriever to Respond to His/Her Name

Let’s say you have found the perfect name for your Labrador Retriever. The next procedure is for you to teach your dog its name and respond to it.

Obviously, it is important for your Lab to become familiar with its name. Make it a point to always call your dog by its name even if it doesn’t respond to it at first. As your dog becomes familiar with the name, it begins to realize that the word/sound that you are making is actually its name or what you intend to call it.

Next, sit together with your dog in a quiet place. Say your dog’s name. If it doesn’t react at first, be patient. Take note that if your dog’s ears go up, that is a good sign of name recognition. Keep on repeating the name until your Lab reacts by lifting its head and looking at you. When this happens, say “yes” and give it a treat.

Do this exercise as often as possible until your Lab automatically responds to its name.

Hope you pick the best name for your Labrador Retriever from our wonderful suggestions above!
